A letter from David Bird concerning the planning application for a Radio Mast in Park Barn Drive is published here. Please feel free to copy/adapt the objections he lists if you want to, and please act quickly as time is very short to object about the application if you want to do so. 7/04/08

From David Bird, WBDRA

Dear All
You might have read in the Press that South West Trains want to close the Travel Centre at Guildford Station. Perhaps you've used the centre and if so, you'll have had a pretty good service and been given some excellent cost-effective options for Rail Travel - our family certainly have.

Bob McShee wrote about the closure in last weeks Surrey Ad where not only do SWT want to close the Travel Centre, they want to convert it to an M&S mini-store (a scaled-down version of the one on Waterloo Station). This store will also be licensed to sell alcohol - as if we didn't have enough Booze Outlets in & around the Station area and the anti-social behaviour which goes with them.

There is a current Planning Application in with GBC and if you would like to join us in objecting to this plan, please e-mail: planningenquiries@guildford.gov.uk quoting Planning Application ref: 08/P/00318 - you can simply say what a bad & unnecessary plan this is for the Guildford commuter. We only have 2 or 3 days to do this.
Many thanks

David

A last call to all those who want to have their say but may not have had time to get around to it. For other information, correspondence about the consultation process and links to the relevant pages at the GBC website, see www.wprag.co.uk (Worplesdon Park and Ride Action Group)
We as an Action Group will now of course be thinking carefully about next steps and would be grateful for any input, ideas or copy specific responses from GBC (Guildford Borough Council).

Guildford Borough Council held a 'drop-in' session on the Guildford Development Framework on Monday 21st January in Worplesdon Memorial Hall, so that we could 'meet with Planning officers to discuss any concerns about the local site allocations'.
The proposed sites in the village are:

  • Woodlands Farm Nursery
  • Land at Oak Hill (rear of Transport Maintenance)
  • Land at 148 Broad Street (Deeprose yard)

Other sites in Worplesdon have also been identified, as have several 'Park & Ride' sites. This is the time to make your views known as the consultation period ends on the 30th January, so please complete and return your comments on these sites as soon as you possibly can. There are forms on-line on the GBC site (click on the link above).
Please visit the WPARAG site for their suggestions for inclusion in the GBC forms, and this page for suggested considerations for the local village sites.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE - Information is available on the Defra and the NFU websites. Both have good maps showing the affected area.
The WBDRA AGM will be at 10:00 on Saturday Dec 1st. The venue will be St Mary's Church Hall on the Aldershot Road. A formal invite will be sent out next month but in the meantime, please mark this date in your diary, tell friends & neighbours and we would welcome any suggestions for items to include on the Agenda. If it helps with your Christmas shopping schedule, we should be finished by 12:00 and you don't have to be there for the whole time of course - partial attendance better than none! Hope to see you there.

Those who braved the weather to visit the Village Show may have been slightly dampened, but most agreed it was one of the best ever. One visitor said "I've been attending the Show for over 20 years and thought this year's was one the best with a lot more variety on offer. "
So a big thank you to all those who gave their time and worked so hard to make it such a great show.

Save the Royal Surrey Campaign slams “utter confusion” on A&E policy The Save the Royal Surrey Campaign has called for urgent clarification on A&E policy in Surrey. This follows revelations that the Surrey PCT has been justifying proposed cuts on the basis that national guidance stipulated that A&Es must serve a population of at least 450,000. However this claim has been rejected by the Department of Health in a reply to a Parliamentary Question asked on behalf of the Campaign, which stressed that A&E provision is a matter for local health services to decide. Roddy Reid is running "The Marathon des Sables" in the Spring and needs sponsors to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease in memory of Dave Chizlett.
The event is held every year in the southern Moroccan desert. The "toughest footrace on earth", the race covers 243km/151 miles run over 6-7 days, equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons. In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.
